T1-11 Siding Explained
Plywood T1-11 is also known simply as plywood siding. A versatile material, it can be stained to simulate a natural wood look, or it can be primed and painted.
Is T1-11 siding waterproof?
T1-11 siding is not waterproof because it is not treated with any resins and chemicals that repel moisture. T1-11 siding needs to be protected against the weather with primer, paint, or stain. You also need to caulk around doors, windows, joints, and nails to keep the water out.
Is T1-11 tongue and groove?
All types of T1-11 siding have outer edges with 3/8-inch wide lips on the long sides, designed to overlap the piece that was installed previously. This is not a tongue-in-groove joint, but rather a lap joint. Panels are always installed with the grooves running vertically.
Is it better to paint or stain T1-11 siding?

Secure the T1-11 to one of the wall studs next to the center stud with 8d nails placed every 8 inches, using the chalk line as a nail placement guide. Drive the first nail into the center of the siding and work toward the top and bottom edges. Place the last nail on each stud within 1 inch of the siding’s edge.
Do you need plywood under T1-11 siding?
It is best to check the local building code to determine if plywood sheathing is required. Even though it may not be considered necessary, many builders feel it is best to use plywood under T1 siding if the structure will be used for human habitation.
How do you seal the bottom of T1-11 siding?

Should you seal the bottom of siding?

Tom: Yes. It’s a perfect application for it because T-111 is nothing more than a textured plywood, and a plywood makes a great sheathing. Get rid of the rot. Get some regular CDX plywood, the same thickness as your T-111, fill in the gaps, put the Tyvek on there, put the Hardie on there.
How can I make my T1-11 siding look good?
Trim It. T1-11 sheets come with solid or grooved faces, and many installers under-trim it, leaving joints between boards uncovered and visible. Covering these joints, especially horizontal ones between stories, with 1-by-4-inch trim improves the appearance of the siding by making it look more finished.
Does T1-11 need to be primed?
You prime T1-111 with an exterior acrylic primer and finish with acrylic house paint in a flat or satin finish. You also don’t use oil based products on T1-111 as it will cause delaminating when it attacks the glues in the plywood.
How do you install Z flashing on T1-11 siding?
Begin at either end of the wall and set the level middle section of the Z-flashing onto the top edge of the siding panel, with the wider flange upward and against the wall framing. Flush the end of the flashing length with the wall corner and secure the flashing to the framing with an 8d nail at each wall stud.
How do you trim a T1-11?
Trim T1-11 with 1- by 3- or 4-inch lumber. Nail the trim to the corners of the house and around windows and doors with 8d galvanized finish nails. It is also common practice to trim the tops to the sheets, where the wall meets the soffit, and the bottoms, where it meets the foundation.
